On March 22, 2024, South African singer Tyla released her self-titled debut album, marking the beginning of a promising international career. A year later, we take a look at the impact of this album on the global music scene and how the artist has evolved within the industry.

Prestigious Awards Since the Album’s Release

Since the release of her album, Tyla has been widely recognized for her exceptional talent. In September 2024, she won the Best Afrobeats award at the MTV Video Music Awards for her hit single "Water". During her acceptance speech, she highlighted the diversity of African music, stating:

"I know there's a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats. While Afrobeats has opened so many doors for us, African music is so diverse. It's more than just Afrobeats. I'm from South Africa. I represent Amapiano. I represent my culture."

In November 2024, at the MTV Europe Music Awards, Tyla took home three major awards: Best R&B Artist, Best African Artist, and Best Afrobeats Artist.

A Remarkable Evolution Despite Her Young Age

At just 22 years old, Tyla has navigated the international music industry with ease. Her ability to blend traditional African sounds with pop and R&B influences has allowed her to stand out and reach a global audience. In March 2025, she collaborated with Jamaican legend Sean Paul on the remix of "PUSH 2 START", a track paying tribute to the early 2000s, seamlessly blending Tyla’s afropop style with Sean Paul’s signature dancehall sound.

In February 2025, Tyla graced the cover of British Vogue, further solidifying her growing influence in both the music and fashion industries.

One year after the release of her debut album, Tyla has not only cemented her place on the global music scene but has also demonstrated an impressive ability to evolve and adapt despite challenges, all while staying true to her cultural roots.
